VATICAN CITY (CNS) Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI, who surprised the world by announcing he would retire as pope, died on Dec. 31, 2022. He was 95 years old. This timeline explores the story of Pope Benedict XVI and his journey to the papacy to his death at the end of 2022.
